They simply formed-up to the curb by laying down two 1×8″s nailed together and then poured concrete over what was left of the existing curb. This leaves a thin edge that is easily broken.

we saw-cut and remove the curb. After removing the curb properly, we then dig down eight inches forming a footer-like area (most of our competitors only pour four inches of concrete at the curb). Rebar is then inserted into these holes and an epoxy type adhesive is used to hold the rebar in place (as necessary). This allows the concrete to expand while keeping it from settling and developing a lip. That way you will always have a smooth transition from your pre-existing concrete areas to your newly installed concrete areas.
